Surf brand sponsors seaweed fibre research
Sydney-headquartered surfwear company Piping Hot has commissioned a research team led by Professor Peter Ralph from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to develop a biomaterial prototype derived from seaweed, the company announced recently.

It is hoped that the resulting innovation will have a transformative impact on the global polyester industry, the brand said, helping fashion and textile firms to reduce their reliance on synthetic fibres by producing a seaweed-based alternative.

Piping Hot also intends for the new material to be able to drive carbon sequestration in the ocean, as part of its self-described mission for clean oceans. Chief executive and managing director of the Australian brand, Stan Wan, stated: “Together [with UTS], we intend to impact climate change through marine science and transform the industry’s reliance on fossil fuels.”

Professor Ralph added that a new, seaweed-derived fibre “has the potential to revolutionise [fashion and textile] products and their impact on the oceans.”
