Italian-led coalition spurs Sea Shepherd on
Majotech, an Italian developer of functional fabrics also known as NT Majocchi, has teamed up with Milan-based activewear brand Sease on a “high-performance” kit for US marine conservation non-profit Sea Shepherd’s Mediterranean fleet.
Working alongside Spanish-led community ocean clean-up initiative Seaqual, the two Italian companies have created a 100% made in Italy capsule of premium-priced functional jackets, pullovers, t-shirts, shorts and a duffle bag made, in the main, from recycled plastic yarn. The waste plastic, also known as recycled polyethylene terephthalate or rPET, was retrieved from the Mediterranean sea.
Meanwhile, the t-shirts and pullover tops in the collection have been knit from various cotton jersey blends, including scuba jersey and nylon, and screen-printed using water-based inks.
By using three-dimensional technology from Futureclo, another Italian firm, the partners were able to reduce waste and manage their resources more efficiently during the product development phase, they said.
The project's aim is to raise awareness of ocean conservation efforts, including the detrimental effects plastic pollution has on ecosystems, as well as raise funds in support of Sea Shepherd's work.
NT Majocchi was acquired by French producer Alpex Protection earlier this year.
