Renewcell already set on doubling capacity

Swedish start-up Renewcell, which specialises in producing recycled dissolving pulp for fibre from waste textiles, recently announced plans to expand its new plant at Ortviken in Sundsvall (due to commence operations midway through 2022) from 60,000 to 120,000 tonnes in annual capacity.

The company attributed the expansion to strong customer interest in its proprietary Circulose product, which it manufactures by upcycling cellulosic textile waste such as cotton and viscose via a patented process.

Construction will not impact commissions for the initial 60,000 tonnes, it said.

Chair of the board, Mia Hemmingson, commented: “The board views the society-wide shift to circularity and sustainability as one of the greatest value creation opportunities in history. Capturing this opportunity requires innovations that scale quickly, such as Renewcell’s unique textile-to-textile recycling process.”

Chief executive, Patrik Lundström, revealed separately that the firm is also currently considering bringing forward its target of 360,000 tonnes in capacity by 2030 to 2025, citing last year’s letter of intent with viscose fibre producer Kelheim Fibres as one example of keen market appetite for Circulose.
