Spinnova-Suzano factory takes shape
A new factory for producing Spinnova’s renewable textile fibre is taking shape in central Finland.
The factory, in the city of Jyväskylä, is for Woodspin, a joint venture that Spinnova has set up with Brazil-based pulp producer Suzano. The partner companies have said they expect to begin installing the technology required to produce the fibres at the end of summer 2022 and for the construction project to be complete by the end of the year.
This will be Woodspin’s first commercial factory but the joint venture partners expect others to follow and for their production capacity of the fibre to reach around 1 million tonnes per annum in the next ten or 12 years.
Spinnova has developed a technique based on fibre suspension flows to make textile fibre from micro-fibrillated cellulose from paper-grade wood pulp. The technique involves mechanically pulping the fibres and controlling the flow in such a way as to form a yarn. It requires no complex chemical processes, Spinnova has said.
