Lycra site ranked highly for social responsibility

The Lycra Company’s fibre manufacturing complex in Maydown, a village in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland, has been officially ranked in the upper quartile of the Higg Facility Social & Labor Module (Higg FSLM).

The site achieved a high score of 83 following interviews with 20 of its employees, a review of unspecified “original source material” and after supplying answers to more than 300 self-assessment questions, which have now been third-party verified.

Developed by the non-profit Sustainable Apparel Coalition, Higg FSLM looks into a facility’s social and labour policies and practices and identifies areas for improvement.

Lycra will ensure all its factories complete Higg FSLM within the next three years, it said. Earlier this year, its largest manufacturing base, located in Foshan in China’s Guangdong province, also received verification of its own high score in the separate Higg Facility Environmental Module (Higg FEM). All six global Lycra fibre production sites have now completed Higg FEM.

European regional operations manager, Seamus McIntyre, commented: “One of the goals within our Planet Agenda is to be an employer of choice. Understanding where we have opportunities for improvement and how we can enhance our employees’ experiences is key to enacting policies that can help us achieve that goal.”

The firm’s Maydown complex first opened in 1957.
