Funding for NFW to scale up Mirum and Clarus production

Material innovation company Natural Fiber Welding (NFW) has closed a funding round, raising $85 million to help it scale up production of materials it describes as “high-performance, petrochemical-free, circular and beautiful”.

It said these materials are now coming to market in products developed by a wide array of footwear and fashion brand partners.

The materials NFW has developed so far are Mirum, a material from renewable, natural raw materials that will work in shoe uppers and accessories, and Clarus, a range of fabrics developed from natural fibres imbued with high-performance attributes through closed-loop green chemistry.

Founder and chief executive of the Illinois-based company, Dr Luke Haverhals, said: “We envision a world that doesn’t rely on plastic, where abundant natural materials enable people and the planet to thrive together. We’re here to leave the world better than we found it and we look forward to working with our brand partners to build a comprehensively circular coalition for the planet.”
