NFW’s ‘circular’ outsole uses natural rubber and plant-based curative
Natural Fiber Welding (NFW), a US-based company focused on natural circular materials, has formed a partnership with Portugal-based shoe component specialist ForEver to expand use of Pliant outsoles.

The sole is derived from natural rubber and cured with NFW’s plant-based curative, as opposed to a sulfur-based vulcanisation process, making them mechanically recyclable by NFW.

Alan Lugo, NFW’s director of footwear strategy, said: “ForEver has five decades of experience and a strong commitment to sustainability. Its flexibility and capability to work with multiple compounds – especially newer and more innovative ones – is second to none.”

ForEver supplies components to more than 500 brands. Its CEO, José Azevedo Pinto, said: “Without sustainability, there is no hope and no future for societies to come. That said, sustainability goals cannot be met if large companies do not make a real commitment to the concept and come together to create sustainable and innovative solutions.”

ForEver will present the soles at Lineapelle leather fair in Milan between September 19 and 21.
