Benefits of inherently repellent yarn on show from 3M

Materials developer 3M will showcase a new water-repellent greige yarn, at The NW Material Show and Premiere Vision Sport events, which takes place in Portland on August 10 and 11.

According to 3M, the new yarn will work well in durable, moisture-managing fabrics for activewear apparel and shoes with knitted uppers. It is pre-treated with the company’s Scotchguard protection, making the yarn inherently water-repellent.

In the build-up to the Portland events, senior application engineer Robert Polik said the greige yarn could “open new doors” for mills and for brands.

Compared to padding repellent onto fabric, using inherently repellent yarn can offer savings in production time, water, chemicals and cost, 3M has argued, while increasing throughput, reducing chalk mark complaints and delivering uniform colour.
