Italian zero-waste designer wins Redress award

Founded in 2007, Redress is a Hong Kong-based environmental charity aligned with the principles of a circular fashion system.
Selected from a group of nine finalists hailing from across Spain, Chile, Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Sri Lanka and his own home country of Italy, designer Federico Badini Confalonieri ultimately won HK$50,000 ($6,400) and the opportunity to work alongside VF Corporation-owned outdoor brand Timberland on an eco-minded design project, collaborating with its team on everything from sourcing to product development.
Outdoor performance brand Icebreaker, also owned by VF, issued the finalists with a final “sheep to shirt” challenge in early September, which required them to create a 100% natural-fibre garment using existing textile waste from the company’s own supply chain. Each entrant participated virtually, with students from Hong Kong Polytechnic University on-hand to help realise their designs locally.
“We sustainable designers may have competed, but the reality is that collaboration creates greater fashion," Mr Confalonieri commented. "To partner with one of the world’s most iconic brands, Timberland, is a huge opportunity for me and I look forward to creating a positive and powerful project together.”
