Enormous jump in fibre-to-fibre recycling is feasible

Fashion for Good, the Amsterdam-based hub that aims to help companies in the fashion supply chain work with innovative technology providers to make clothes more sustainable, has announced the completion of a 16-month project called Sorting For Circularity Europe. It has also published a report detailing the project’s findings.

According to the report, almost three-quarters of low-value, post-consumer textile waste in Europe could be suitable for fibre-to-fibre recycling.

During the project, more than 20,000 tonnes of post-consumer garments underwent analysis. The project team found that 21% of the material was suitable for mechanical recycling and that a further 53% was suitable for chemical recycling.

“This presents a significant opportunity for circularity as currently only 2% of post-consumer textiles are diverted to fibre-to-fibre recycling,” Fashion for Good said.
