Circular design principles to come into 50% of UA products by 2027
Sports brand Under Armour has published a new sustainability and impact report, using figures from 2021. The report outlines 23 goals and targets that the company said would drive progress.
Interim chief executive, Colin Browne, said: “As an innovator in athletic performance apparel, footwear, and accessories, we believe Under Armour has an important role to play in addressing impending challenges. This belief compels us to rethink, reinvent, and reimagine our products and how we make them.”
The report said the company wanted to “make athletes better” by focusing on performance-driven innovations that use more sustainable materials and are designed for recyclability. It also said it wanted to make its production processes more efficient.
Added details it published regarding materials included prioritising material innovations that will enable less waste and more durability, “setting the stage for circular systems by 2030”. It will have a preference for recycled and renewable materials and reducing single-use plastic brand product packaging by 75% by 2025.
It said it would build sustainability and circular design principles into at least half of its products by 2027 and develop chemistry and processes that can enable a circular footwear program to be launched in market, at scale, by 2030.
At the end of 2021, approximately 40% of fabrics used in the company’s apparel and accessories were made from materials capable of being recycled.
