Plastic-free materials tool launches for designers
London-based environmental advocacy organisation A Plastic Planet has launched PlasticFree as a platform for materials, systems, case studies and expert essays.
It is intended to help design teams learn about and select plastic-free resources, then connect them with their global makers and developers.
Two years in the making, the site is supported by its own Creative and Science Council, comprising 40-plus stakeholders including fashion consultant Shaway Yeh, scientist Professor Terry Collins, designers Skylar Tibbits and Thomas Heatherwick, architects Sir David Chipperfield and Professor Jeremy Till, plus more.
“If we can ignite and empower creatives by giving them trusted, relevant data and inspiring case studies, we believe we can change [today's plastic dependence] much faster,” commented one of the co-founders of PlasticFree and A Plastic Planet, Sian Sutherland. “Designers want to be part of the solution, but there is a minefield of misinformation out there," she added.
PlasticFree will officially launch on February 2 during an event at the New School’s Tishman Auditorium.
Guest speakers will include materials developer Natural Fiber Welding’s founder and chief executive, Dr Luke Haverhals, and chief innovation officer at fashion brand Pangaia, Dr Amanda Parkes.
