Blockchain can aid sustainable textiles choices, Kelheim says
Viscose fibre manufacturer Kelheim Fibres has announced a new partnership with traceability platform TextileGenesis, through which it has pledged to create “radical transparency from fibre-to-retail”.
It said this would provide sustainability-conscious consumers with guarantees that the products they buy are truly sustainable.
“Our wood-based fibres are an environmentally friendly basis for sustainable textiles,” said Kelheim’s director of new business, Dr Marina Crnoja-Cosic, “[but] consumers often don’t know what’s behind their garments. They need to know it’s in their hands to minimise the ecological footprint of the textile industry.”
TextileGenesis uses blockchain technology to track and verify the use of sustainable fibres all the way from fibre to garment. What it calls “a digital fibercoin” can ensure transparency and reliability throughout production and beyond, it claims.
