Canopy publishes latest MMCF supplier audits

15/12/2022
Canadian non-profit Canopy, an environmental organisation working to encourage proper stewardship of ancient and endangered forests, has published third-party audits for seven signatories of its CanopyStyle initiative, which primarily focuses on responsible wood-based textile fibre production.

Turkish lyocell staple fibre manufacturer Kara, US-based maker of dissolving pulp Cosmo Speciality Fibers (CSF) and Indonesian viscose staple fibre producer PT Rayon Utama Makmur (RUM Indonesia) all provided results for the first time. Membership of the initiative, first launched in 2013, had surpassed 500 signatories as of October.

Broadly, all were found by auditors Preferred by Nature and SCS Global Services to present a low risk to ancient and endangered forests in their sourcing activities, with the exception of RUM Indonesia, who required more information from its suppliers to complete a full risk assessment. Canopy said this was because the manufacturer had recently increased its use of Forest Steward Council-certified fibres.

In addition to Kara and CSF, the other four companies to publish their audit results were China’s Jilin Chemical Fiber and Xinxiang Chemical Fiber (Xinxiang Bailu), plus German suppliers ENKA and Kelheim Fibres.

Canopy’s director of strategic initiatives, Amanda Carr, commented that the organisation was “very pleased” to not only have onboarded more manmade cellulosic fibre (MMCF) producers as signatories, but also to see CanopyStyle participants “follow through” with the audit process.
