Zipper pioneer Artilect celebrates repairability of YKK product

Colorado-based outdoor brand Artilect has become the first to incorporate new fastening technology YKK into garments.

It has put YKK’s Revived zipper into its Formation 3L Shell jacket and High AF down jacket. The significance of this, the brand said, is that the new zips are repairable. Artilect co-founder and chief executive, Trent Bush, has described this as a major breakthrough. The zipper slider can be detached and reattached in the field by the wearer, or at a retail store.

This will save outdoor enthusiasts money, Artilect said, because they will no longer have to throw a jacket out if the zipper breaks or pay for an expensive repair by a technician.

It pointed out that, while a broken zip on a jacket is always “an inconvenience”, it can be dangerous if the wearer is out in the back country at the time.
