Producer of sewing thread and structural components for apparel and footwear Coats Group has published its 2022 sustainability report.

Coats launched its current sustainability strategy in 2019 and set itself scope-one and scope-two emissions reduction targets for 2030 and the overall target of becoming a net-zero business by 2050.

But it also set itself short-term targets to complete by the end of 2022.

It has said in the report that it met three of the short-term targets, “despite the challenges posed by the pandemic”.

It achieved a 10% reduction in energy use and a 25% reduction in waste. It also increased its coverage of ‘Great Place To Work’ certification to 86%.

The group pointed out that, by the end of 2022, it was more than 90% of the way to meeting its target on two further targets, water use and effluence quality.

It is now working towards a further set of short-term targets for 2026. These include a 22% reduction in scope-one and scope-two emissions compared to its 2022 figures and a 60% transition to recycled or bio-based materials.

By 2026, it will also aim to achieve a 33% increase in water recycling compared to 2022, have zero-waste-to-landfill and 100% ZDHC compliance, 88% ‘Great Place To Work’ coverage and 30% of leadership roles filled by women.

Group sustainability director, Chris Dearing, said Coats was proud of the progress it has made so far.
