Partners announce innovative polyester recycling plant

11/08/2023

Swiss fibre technology developer Gr3n has announced that it will work with industrial engineering group Intecsa to build a new manufacturing facility.

Gr3n has developed a process, based on the application of microwave technology to alkaline hydrolysis, through which it says it will be able to provide an economically viable approach to the recycling of polyester. Madrid-based Intecsa was already a shareholder in the Swiss start-up.

They will now form a joint venture and build a first-of-its-kind manufacturing facility to produce recycled fibres that they describe as “virgin-like”. Its projected capacity will be 40,000 tonnes per year.

The new factory will use polyester fibres from a number of sources, including textile waste. The partners’ aim is for it to be operational in 2027.
