Midsole in new Saucony shoe has 55% plant-based content

Running shoe brand Saucony has used a midsole with a high level of bio-based content in a new shoe called the Triumph RFG.

Called the PWRRUN BIO+, the new midsole’s composition includes 55% Susterra, CovationBio’s fully plant-based 1,3-propanediol (PDO).

Saucony said this use of Susterra was in keeping with its recently announced sustainability goals of having 90% of its products contain a proportion of organic, recycled or renewable materials by 25%, rising to 100% of products by 2030.

The Triumph RFG also has an outsole that is 80% natural rubber.

Vice-president for marketing and sales at CovationBio, John Hurban, said this was the first example the polymer developer is aware of such a high percentage of bio-based going into the midsole of an athletic shoe.  He added that this partnership with Saucony was a reflection of the companies’ shared desire “to build a more circular economy with a renewable footprint in the performance footwear brands category”.
