Stella McCartney uses enzyme process for parka
Fashion brand Stella McCartney has unveiled the first garment made with Protein Evolution’s Biopure, which uses enzymes to break down polyester waste into the raw materials that it claims are indistinguishable from the petroleum-derived raw materials.

Biopure is capable of handling a variety of waste streams, from plastic bottles and clam-shells, to industrial textiles and garments.

Connor Lynn, co-founder Protein Evolution, said: “Not only is this coat validation for the utility and quality of biorecycled polyester – specifically polyester chips created using Biopure – it also offers companies an alternative to the landfill or incinerator for their fabrics, extending the life of their materials indefinitely.”

The parka is made from rigid packaging waste and industrial textile strappings, formerly used to secure international freight containers, processed by Biopure.

Stella McCartney’s SOS Fund was one of the first to invest in Protein Evolution, and offered unused fabrics from previous collections for testing the process.
