Brazil the likely location of second Woodspin fibre factory

11/03/2024

Following the start of production in 2023 of a first Woodspin production facility, the two companies behind the venture have now signed a letter of intent to set up a second factory for textile fibres from cellulose derived from wood pulp.

The two partners behind Woodspin are Spinnova and Suzano. The first of these is a Finnish start-up company that has developed a technique, based on fibre suspension flows, to make textile fibres from renewable waste materials. The second is a Brazil-based producer of paper and pulp.

They have been partners since 2020. They opened a first Woodspin factory in Jyväskylä, Finland.

For this second factory, Spinnova will deliver its fibre production technology to Suzano and the Brazilian group will be the owner and operator of the new production facility. It will have a preliminary target capacity of 20,000 tonnes of fibre per year.

No definitive details of the new location have come into the public domain, but the partners have said this second Woodspin factory is likely to be located near an existing Suzano pulp mill. Its mills are in Brazil.
