Spinnova begins R&D spinning in Portugal

09/05/2024
Finnish cellulose fibre company Spinnova has commenced its R&D yarn spinning in Portugal.

Spinnova and Portuguese textiles maker Tearfil entered into a yarn development cooperation agreement in June 2023, with machinery delivered by Germany’s Rieter.

Spinnova has developed a technique, based on fibre suspension flows, to make textile fibres from micro-fibrillated cellulose from paper-grade wood pulp. The technique involves mechanically pulping the fibres and controlling the flow in such a way as to form a yarn without using any complex chemical processes.

The aim is to develop the fibre to be used in different applications in commercial-scale yarn production and to streamline development work with industrial partners.

Spinnova’s chief product and sustainability officer, Shahriare Mahmood, said: “Our aim is to produce guidelines for the industry to apply Spinnova fibre in various applications, which will be created with the help of Rieter by combining the expertise of Tearfil in yarn processing.”
