Spinnova creates new, bio-based fibre from Circulose
Nordic textile innovators Spinnova and Renewcell have united in a “first-of-its-kind” partnership to scale and commercialise a new textile waste-based fibre that can be spun without any need for harmful chemicals inputs.
Using patented technologies and processes from both companies, they have developed a new, bio-based fibre from Renewcell’s Circulose brand of dissolving cellulose pulp, which is made using 100% textile waste like cottons and viscose. Previously, sheets of Circulose have only ever been used to manufacture manmade cellulosic fibres like viscose.
Finland-headquartered Spinnova has already successfully spun pure Circulose pulp into new textile fibres. Its deputy chief executive, Ben Selby, called these initial tests “very promising”.
Early prototypes are a blend of cotton and Spinnova fibres produced from 100% Circulose.
Next steps include a potential scale-up alongside fresh collaborators, they said, with the first consumer-ready products expected to become available by end 2024.
