Ardmel develops “real life” test method
Scottish textile and apparel machinery maker Ardmel Group is introducing a new testing device for moisture management, The Comparator, which it says measures a fabric’s performance in true-to-life conditions.

The Comparator, the company says, will make it possible to see how fabrics perform in both wet and dry conditions, and specifically improve garment performance by measuring condensation created by the microclimate of the textile. It is thus aligned with the new AATCC TM214 method, introduced by the AATCC in 2023, which measures accumulated condensation on a fabric.

“We are truly excited to launch The Comparator and bring a revolutionary testing technology to the market and achieve what has not been possible before. Currently the standard test method is carried out in dry conditions similar to the Sahara Desert, not really the conditions for when you would look to wear a waterproof, breathable jacket. Brands will now be able to effectively test materials to the AATCC TM214 test method and fully understand the performance of the fabrics they use by measuring condensation,” said Arlene Kidd, Ardmel Group director.
