New traceability solution for recycled cotton

12/12/2025
After plastics, metals and rubber, Security Matters Limited (SMX), a physical and blockchain-based traceability solution provider, has added cotton to the roster of raw materials that its platform covers. The company has successfully completed an industrial pilot on recycled cotton, confirming that its molecular marker can identify the fibres through shredding, carding, spinning and fabric making. It claims that the system provides proof of virgin and recycled fibre ratios in a finished product. This is an important stepping stone towards future digital product passports.

SMX’s ‘molecular’ marker is now moving on to a commercial rollout allowing apparel brands, recyclers and manufacturers to authenticate origin and recycled content at industrial scale.

The company originally based in Melbourne has developed and patented a chemical-based ‘barcode’ that permanently and irrevocably ‘marks’ any object, be it solid, liquid or gas. The
barcode can be read using the company’s proprietary ‘reader’ to access stored data that is recorded and protected using blockchain technology.
