Biobased demand inspires 75% natural membrane

Novaresin, an Italian producer of technical finishes and membranes, has developed a biobased membrane composed of more than 75% natural materials, to help its sports and fashion brand customers towards their goals of creating products with a reduced impact on the planet.

The biobased membrane achieves a water column of more than 5,000 (equates to withstanding light rain) and still offers breathability, export manager Elisa Fumagalli told Sportstextiles.

The company’s new developments also include a 100% GRS certified recycled membrane (polyester) and a membrane that captures light in the day and emits it at night, for use in glow-in-the-dark jackets. It also makes shiny and reflective laminated fabrics for the fashion sector.

Launched 1973, the company initially worked in fashion and furnishings, but has branched into outdoor technical fabrics and geotextiles. In 2019, it worked with Directa Plus on membranes based on a polyurethane film containing the Directa Plus’s G+ graphene nanoplatelets for outdoor clothing.
