Selenis has eyes on increasing capacity
Portuguese polyester producer Selenis has acquired the assets of Greek polyester producer Polisan Hellas, which its latest owners from Turkey suspended at the beginning of 2026. The equipment will be installed at a Selenis site in Portugal to increase continuous production capacity. The company also owns plants in Italy, Tunisia and the United States. It is planning to reach an annual capacity of 200,000 metric tonnes of specialty copolyesters in 2028.
Continuous production serves the high-volume markets, whereas batch production is more suited to custom grades and smaller volumes, the company said in a statement. The Polisan Hellas assets will help reinforce the group’s priority markets (shrink sleeves, film and sheet), along with its textile-to-textile recycling activities. TRhese are a part of Texnascis, which makes rPET from polyester monomers supplied by chemical recyclers.
Selenis owner IMG Group is investigating other possible acquisitions. “We are evaluating new investments in Germany in the biobased field and in Tunisia, where we are exploring textile-to-textile opportunities through DMT technology. Each investment adds a capability to one manufacturing platform, and each is chosen for the markets where our customers see the strongest long-term growth,” commented strategy & integration director Eduardo Santos.
DMT, or dimethyl terephthalate, is an alternative route to polyester production, with different parameters compared PTA+ MEG, which is the more common today.
