Extra care needed, says IAF, as supervisors arrested over factory fire

The International Apparel Federation (IAF) has issued a statement saying that “extra steps” have to be taken to prevent tragedies like the factory fire in Bangladesh last weekend that killed at least 120.

IAF president Harry van Dalfsen said many companies have made huge improvements in social compliance and sustainability and were involved in training, educating and monitoring suppliers in order to meet national or local government regulations.

“Nevertheless, this tragedy, and the recent one in Pakistan, showed that extra steps have to be taken to improve the working conditions for workers in the industry. The IAF Global Responsibility Committee is running a very active programme to achieve these goals,” he added.

The issue will be raised at the next IAF board meeting in Mumbai and at the 29th IAF World Apparel Convention next September in Shanghai.

Three supervisors at the Bangladeshi factory were arrested yesterday, and police said they had arrested two people who were seen on CCTV trying to set fire to stockpiles of cotton in another factory. Protests have continued this week in Dhaka, with textile workers clashing with police.
