Cambodian leader warns against factory strikes

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has urged footwear and apparel workers in the country to avoid strikes that could make factory owners move to other countries.

"We have to take care of the factories, or they can move to other countries such as Myanmar, Bangladesh, India or Laos, where labour is cheaper than Cambodia and there is no strike," he said.

About 84,320 workers in 101 factories staged protests last year, according to the Free Trade Union of Workers. Earlier this month, 4,000 protested about pay at Sabrina Garment factory, which makes clothing for Nike. Sixteen Cambodian garment workers and union representatives have been charged with inciting violence and damaging property.

The monthly minimum wages for factory workers in Cambodia is about $80, compared with $45 dollars in Myanmar, $40 in Bangladesh and $79 in Laos.
