Nike supplier strikes to continue

A strike involving “tens of thousands” of workers at a Chinese footwear manufacturer is reportedly going to continue after a new social plan proposed by bosses was rejected by unions.

A key point of contention at Yue Yuen has been the perceived scamming of workers through inadequate contributions from the firm into a social insurance scheme, and the difficulty of cashing in this money later.

The group supplies to brands including adidas and Nike and has plants in China, Indonesia and Vietnam. It made 300 million pairs of shoes in 2013 and had profits of $434.8 million.

An independent labour organisation estimated that 30,000 workers went on strike on Monday and more on Tuesday, and said there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.
