Novozymes confirms involvement in biomass-based polyester project

Danish biotech company Novozymes has confirmed that it will supply enzyme technology to the world’s first biomass-to-glycols bio-refinery.

Chinese manufacturers M&G Chemicals and the Guozhen Group are to work together to build the new facility in Anhui province, which they have said will begin production in 2015. It will have the capacity to process one million tonnes of biomass per year, producing mono-ethylene glycol (MEG).

One of MEG’s main application areas is in the production of polyester fibre and as one of two main components in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) production.

Novozymes executive vice-president for business development, Thomas Videbæk, said in response to the news: “M&G Chemicals is taking a big step towards a bio-based society where biomass is used for products like fuel, chemicals and plastics. We are looking forward to the long-term collaboration.”

Novozymes said it will supply the enzyme technology for biomass conversion on an exclusive basis over a 15-year period.
