US: New Balance could benefit from military strategy

The US Department of Defense has begun evaluating domestically manufactured athletic footwear sources for procurement, which could benefit sportswear brand New Balance.

“One way we can make America a magnet for new jobs and manufacturing without increasing the federal deficit is to make sure that the athletic footwear purchased by entry-level military recruits is manufactured by US companies like New Balance,” said US Senator Susan Collins, who has been instrumental in pushing the new move, which she describes as a “step in the right direction”.

The Berry Amendment says soldiers should wear American-made uniforms where possible, however, since 2002 for the army and 2008 for the Air Force, recruits have been given an allowance to choose any brand of athletic shoe. In May, Senator Collins co-authored a bill that would require that such items are bought from American manufacturers, such as New Balance, which manufactures some of its products at factories in Norridgewock, Skowhegan, and Norway, Maine.
