Patagonia makes investment in textile cleaning and coating start-up

cleaning, disinfecting and coating fabrics and textiles, has secured funding from outdoor brand Patagonia.
The system, called Tersus, uses carbon dioxide in the same way as carbonated drinks manufacturers do, offering what CO2Nexus claims is a minimal impact compared to traditional water or solvent-based cleaning methods. Other benefits can include down loft enhancement and water repellency.
“Processing textiles and apparel requires huge amounts of energy and water, and both are in crisis,” said Patagonia chief executive, Rose Marcario, at the time of the announcement. “CO2Nexus is a great fit. It’s a young company using business and innovation to bring about positive benefits to the environment. Patagonia is proud to invest in their success.”
Its investment in CO2Nexus is part of a programme called ‘$20 Million & Change’, which Patagonia created in 2013 to support one of its mission-statement commitments: to use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. Through what it calls “strategic investments in start-ups that share this value”, Patagonia has said it will help entrepreneurs and innovators succeed in “working with nature rather than using it up”.
