Textile Exchange calls for donations to get Responsible Wool Standard off the ground
21/10/2014
First touted in March, the standard “will enable accurate claims about wool products, and ultimately give consumers the ability to make informed choices”.
“In recent months, the animal welfare issues associated with wool have been brought to the attention of millions around the world,” said Anne Gillespie, director of industry integrity at the Textile Exchange. “Brands and supply chain companies involved in wool production are looking for a way to address these issues in their own products.
“It is an ambitious task, especially in consideration of the many players and regions involved in wool supply around the world. But with the quality of the IWG, we have confidence in our ability to create a strong standard. With strong representation from a wide range of stakeholders, including animal welfare groups, farmers, supply chain members, brands and industry associations, we have the experience, expertise and commitment that we need.
It is asking for financial support to move the standard from concept to something that works “on the ground”. The total projected cost (separate from pilot audits) is $142,500. Textile Exchange has pledged $11,500 and H&M $70,000.
“To make this truly an industry standard, we’d like to get as many organisations as possible contributing to its development,” added Ms Gillespie. “If we go over the total figure, we can use the additional money to finance pilot audits, and to drive greater marketing and adoption. We also welcome in-kind services at any point, such as research, graphic design and legal. This is your chance to be part of shifting industry.”
The target to achieve full funding is December 1, 2014.
