EOG views early 2014 figures on European outdoor market as “encouraging”

Despite what the representative body described as challenging conditions, the outdoor industry increased sales by between 1% and 3%, according to trade figures it has analysed and a survey of its members.
However, it also said that more businesses reported a flat or declining year of trade in 2014 than in the recent past.
Mark Held, EOG general secretary, said on announcing the results of the research: “As predicted at the start of the year, 2014 was challenging for outdoor businesses. In that context, these figures are encouraging and demonstrate the relative strength of our sector.”
He said the EOG recognises that the sales barometer provides a less-than-full picture of the retail situation and that the experience of smaller businesses may have been different. “Competition is tough at the brand and retail side,” Mr Held added.
