Protect Our Winters (POW), a community of snow sports enthusiasts, including winter sports clothing and equipment brands, dedicated to “protecting winters” (so that future generations can enjoy the same sports activities), has sent a letter to President Barack Obama.

POW wrote to the president on September 8 urging him to help secure reductions in carbon emissions and a future in which clean energy is available to all by doing all he can to make the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris later this year a success.

The snow sports industry views climate change as an economic opportunity as well as an environmental issue, the letter continued. “Our businesses support $62 billion in tourist-related revenue, 964,000 jobs and $4.6 billion in annual retail sales,” POW said, referring to the US alone.

It went on to say that 2014 was the warmest year in the temperature record and that 2015 is on track to surpass it. “Failure to act now on climate is unacceptable, and will result in damage to the environment, tourism and the economy,” it added.
