Warm weather hits snow sector sales in the US

Sales in the snow sports market in the US fell 4% in value to $2.9 billion in the season bewtween August and September last year, according to Trade association SnowSports Industries America and consultancy NPD Group.

The Pacific West recovered from a four year snow drought, but retailers in the East and Midwest suffered a lack of winter weather.

Outerwear sales including fleece, shell, insulated shell and softshell tops and bottoms fell 3% to $1.2 billion and accounted for more than 40% sales.

Apparel accessories sales including handwear, headwear, socks and baselayer sales were down 8% to $348 million.

Snowboard equipment sales were down 4% to $176 million, while alpine ski equipment sales fell 3% to $351 million.
