US apparel market sees growing online influence

US apparel sales totalled $218.7 billion in 2016, a 3% increase compared to the previous year, according to a report from specialist research group NPD.

It described “changing consumer needs” and an “evolving retail marketplace” as the key drivers behind the growth of the US apparel industry in 2016. It cautioned, however, that despite positive overall performance, it had failed to exceed 3% sales growth since 2013.

NPD highlighted the growth of online shopping as a key retail shift revealing that online transactions represented 19% of total sales in 2016. This compares to just 11% in 2011.

It also underlined the importance of the athleisure apparel category, which was the segment that grew the most during 2016. Sales of athleisure clothing increased 11% to $45.9 billion, which NPD attributed to the apparel consumer’s desire for comfort and style.
