US athletic footwear sales close in on $20 billion mark

The women’s market grew the fastest, with sales 5% higher than in 2016. Both the men’s footwear market and the children’s footwear market grew 1%.
NPD’s report said the largest category in athletic footwear is now what it calls “sport leisure”. This category saw its sales grow 17% to $9.6 billion. This means it overtook performance footwear, which banked sales of $7.4 billion, down 10% year on year. Sales of running shoes fell 7% during the year.
The research group also revealed that the top-selling brands in dollar terms in 2017 were Nike/Jordan Brand, adidas, Skechers, Under Armour and New Balance. Of these, Adidas grew the fastest in 2018, increasing its sales of athletic footwear by more than 50%.
