“We’re excited to kick off the winter season with this first report to help our members better understand the key metrics in our industry and drive their business forward,” said SIA President Nick Sargent, adding that it is the first of several reports that will be released this season.
SIA’s research found that 100 million people in the US are active in the outdoors throughout winter. This includes 11.8 million who take part in downhill skiing, 7.6 million who take part in snowboarding and 8 million who take part in sledding.
Quoting a report from the NPD Group, the SIA data shows that retail sales for winter 2016/17 were $4.3 billion, the majority of which comes via specialty channels. Online retail sales totalled $975 million.
SIA also revealed that “big box chain stores” are starting to lose ground to independent retailers and local stores.
The full report is available on the SIA website.
