Novel plant fibre and elastic zips take Performance Days awards

02/11/2015
Organisers of the Performance Days fair have chosen Flocus and YKK as the recipients of this year’s awards.

Chinese company Flocus wins Eco Performance Award  for a yarn based on the kapok plant.

Composed of cellulose, xylan, and lignin, it is among the lightest natural hollow fibres, but because of a fine wax-like coating, the kapok fibres are not easily spun. However, Flocus’ process produces yarns that can be used as a cushioning material or insulation, but may also be processed as a fabric.

Kapok is light, has very high insulation properties and has a natural antibacterial effect.

Zip maker YKK won the Performance Award for its elastic zip Soflex that can be stretched 10%. The elasticity of the zip permits improved processing and better-looking high-stretch outer fabrics, said judges.

Performance Days take place in Munich, Germany, on November 3 and 4.
