More shoe brands sign up as Michelin strides ahead with technical soles

Michelin has expanded the number of outdoor footwear brands it is working with to four. The company, best known for tyres, began a project to develop technical soles for footwear in 2014. Last year, it announced Italian outdoor brand Salewa had agreed to use technology from Michelin in the soles of two of the styles in its footwear collection for spring-summer 2016.

Two Salewa models, Lite Train and Ultra Train, use Michelin technology in their soling systems, each using different blends of rubber and combinations of grip systems Michelin uses already in its tyres. It said on presenting its new partnership with Salewa that the shoes’ soles will work on a wide variety of terrain and have a built-in ability to self-clean.

Now the Michelin technical soles project is taking further strides through new partnerships the company is preparing to announce with Hi-Tec, Kodiak and Ride.

Michelin announced a joint-venture with Chinese textile manufacturer Jihua at the end of 2014 to make high-performance soles for the technical footwear market. The two partners said at the time that they believe the footwear market is “hungry for technology”.
