Ethiopia’s cotton ambitions thwarted by El Niño

Ethiopia’s Textile Industry Development Institute (ETIDI) has said that drought prevented the country’s cotton farmers from producing as much cotton as they hoped in 2015.

They had a target of 262,000 hectares but in the end the land dedicated to the cotton crop was only 65,000 hectares.

ETIDI blamed the weather effects of El Niño for at least part of the problem. It said that 14,000 hectares of land on which cotton was sown had to be replanted with short-term crops after the cotton failed.

Ethiopia’s cotton crop could become bigger in future seasons. New areas are under consideration for cotton cultivation, including Shinile, Wabe-shebele and Genale Basin.
