US says China to scrap export subsidies

China will end export subsidies on a range of items including agricultural products and textiles, according to a US trade representative.

Michael Froman said that China had agreed to end the programme which sees it provide export subsidies to Chinese companies in seven economic sectors. Textiles, apparel and footwear are among the sectors concerned.

“This agreement addresses all elements of the subsidy programme,” he said. “It also ensures the necessary transparency to give us a solid basis to monitor closely and confirm whether the terms of the agreement are being met.”

It comes about a year after the United States filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization about the programme, alleging “unfair, prohibited export subsidies to a large range of Chinese manufacturers and producers”.
