South Asia apparel exports to US on the rise

Textile and apparel exports to the US from countries in South Asia showed significant increases in March although East Asian countries saw major declines, according to the US Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles.

India saw a 15.3% increase in exports to the US compared to February whilst there was a 7.8% rise in exports from Bangladesh. Pakistan showed an 8.8% increase on the previous month. These figures represented small increases when compared to March 2015.

Figures from East Asia were much more disappointing, led by a 43.3% drop in exports of textiles and apparel from China to the US. Vietnam recorded a 22.4% dip whilst exports from Cambodia were down 22%. When compared to the same period last year, this equates to respective decreases of 42.1%, 22.6% and 34.4%.
