Nearly 800 apparel factories in Bangladesh have been closed down following inspections, according to the country’s commerce minister Tofail Ahmed. Speaking to the Bangladeshi parliament on June 20, Mr Ahmed said 790 factories have been completely or partially closed after not meeting standards on issues such as fire safety and factory security.

Of the factories completely closed down, 39 are export-oriented ready made garment (RMG) centres. A further 42 RMGs were ordered to partially shut after inspections of 3,746 apparel units.

Mr Ahmed also told parliament that Bangladesh now enjoys duty-free benefits in 52 countries, including 28 European nations, for all items apart from arms and ammunition. The minister added that the US has allowed duty-free access for 8,620 products from Bangladesh.
