Alibaba responds to criticism over counterfeits

Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding, parent company of the online trading platform Alibaba, has defended itself against criticism that it is not doing enough to prevent counterfeiting through its platforms.

Earlier this week, the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) called for the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to re-list Alibaba and its e-commerce platforms as a “notorious market”.

“At Alibaba, counterfeit goods are absolutely unacceptable,” Alibaba said in a letter to the USTR. "We do not tolerate or condone those who steal other people’s intellectual property."

The company said it has made it easier for brands to issue complaints and request the removal of counterfeit items from its platforms. It added that in the 12 months to August, it took down 380 million product listings and closed around 675 production, storage, or sales operations of counterfeit products.
