AAFA criticises Alibaba over counterfeits

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) has asked the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to re-list Chinese online retailer Alibaba, as well as its e-commerce platforms such as Taobao, as a “notorious market”.

The USTR publishes a list of Notorious Markets every year to highlight “select online and physical marketplaces that reportedly engage in or facilitate substantial copyright piracy and trademark counterfeiting”. Alibaba was removed from the list in 2012.

AAFA says Alibaba has failed to meet the USTR’s recommendations to prevent the sale of counterfeits through its platforms. It points to research by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, a Chinese government agency, which said 67% of the items sold on Alibaba’s Taobao platform were counterfeit.

“Despite numerous public statements that the company is taking the counterfeit problem seriously, we have yet to see improvements on Alibaba’s platforms,” said Rick Helfenbein, president and CEO of AAFA.
