AAFA asks for help in battle against counterfeit goods sales in China

The American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) has said it has grown tired of waiting for progress in a battle to stop online sales of counterfeit branded goods in China and has asked the US authorities to intervene.

On April 9, AAFA released a statement saying it has been engaged in efforts for much of the last year to secure help from Chinese online retail group Alibaba in preventing sellers from passing off counterfeit goods as the real thing. It said it had particular issues with TaoBao, China’s most popular online marketplace, and wanted Alibaba to help it address the problem of sales of counterfeit goods.

“After nine months of talks with TaoBao, we've seen little progress,” the AAFA said, “We shared this concern yesterday with the Office of the United States Trade Representative and the US Securities and Exchange Commission in two letters. Protecting the intellectual property of our members is a priority area of focus for AAFA. Eighty percent of customs seizures are fashion-related. This cost the industry $68 billion in 2013.”

It said it would call attention to intellectual property issues at every opportunity taking its concerns directly to the US government.
