Optimism about future of Taiwan’s textile industry

19/10/2016
Senior figures from two of Taiwan’s leading textile manufacturers have said they are confident of a positive future for the country’s textile industry, local media reports. The comments were made at the ongoing Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (Titas), which takes place from October 17 to 19.

Hung Chen-hai, chairman of Eclat Textile, said an increase in demand is likely to give the industry a boost. He added that overall industry revenue for the second half of 2016 is forecast to be higher than the same period of last year.

Douglas Hsu, chairman of Far Eastern New Century (FENC), believes Taiwan’s textile industry is in good shape due to the growing functional apparel market. According to Mr Hsu, functional wear makes up only 10% of Taiwan’s textile market, meaning there is lots of room for improvement.

Addressing senior company figures and representatives from the media on the opening day of Titas, Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-Wen, said the government would work with local textile manufacturers to help them build their own brands and develop functional textiles. She urged them to build partnerships with technology companies to upgrade Taiwan’s textile industry so that it is more competitive in the global market.
