Cambodian garment workers urged to stay in the country

The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, has called on those working in the country’s garment and footwear industry to remain in their jobs rather than searching for employment in neighbouring countries.

Mr Hun Sen said workers remaining in Cambodia would deter local companies from moving their factories to countries like Myanmar or Bangladesh, where labour costs are lower.

He also emphasised that the key to increasing productivity and product quality in Cambodia is to improve the skills of those already working in the industry. This would attract new investors, he added.
